Page 45 Next
(continued from page 27 This begins those who came to America of the Corrie branch from William of Clunie, William Corrie (ref. 1.1.5.1.) and Mary Gracey. William is descended from John Corrie, (ref. 1.) his son, Adam Corrie, (ref. 1.1.) his son "Father John" John Corrie, (ref. 1.1.5.). Remember to apply any prefix birth order The numbering for William's descendants is used only in the heading in the interest of space. All those with Corrie surnames are in capital letters. 1.1.5.1. WILLIAM, baptized 5 Apr 1766 in Irongray, died 5 Jun 1835 aged 70; farmer in Mossyard, Borgue, until 1812 when he moved three miles north-east to Largs, Twynham; married in Borgue, Scotland 31 Jul 1794 to Margaret Gracey (or Gracie) who was born in 1773, died in 1827. Times were hard in Scotland and William, Margaret and ten of their eleven children left the Corrie lands near Kirkcudbright partly for economic reasons, partly because of the fear of the political threat of a revolution. William was "Father John's" eldest son, and the second of the family to come to the United States. They left Scotland in 1822 some say they stayed briefly in New York. In 1822, they settled in Decker's Prairie in the Sumner and Bridgeport area in Lawrence Co, IL. part of the 10,000 acres of land purchased by William's brother Adam (ref. 1.1.5.3.). William was 57 and Margaret was 49 when they arrived in Illinois; they cleared the land, built houses, purchased livestock and began a new life on the prairie. It was soon enough following the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 that prejudice among the early American settlers sometimes ran high against the newcomers from the British Isles. Indians were still present in the territory to add to their concern. Margaret died in 1827; William died in 1835 in Lawrence Co and a year later a sale of his possessions was held attended by three of his sons and a son-in-law who together purchased nearly every item ensuring these personal effects remained in the family. William and Margaret are buried near his brother John in the family graveyard on the farm (located from the center of the S. 1/2 S.W. 1/4, Sec. 30, T2N, R I2W, Lawrence Co. IL). The stone that marks their resting place read "WILLIAM CORRIE'S STONE... Sacred to the memory of Unknown Corrie, consort of William Corrie, who died September anno domino, 1827, Aged 54 years." In October of 1993, Dallas Krumm (ref. 1.1.5.1.5.1.1.3.3.3.) guided Evelyn Corrie Birkby (ref. 1.1.5.1.8.4.5.2.) back into the farm field to the graves but they could not find the stone marker; William and Margaret's children, 1. John, 2. William Jr., 3. Margaret, 4. James, 5. Adam, 6. Andrew, 7. Joseph, 8. Thomas, 9. Jannet (Jane), 10. Mary, 11. George. 1.1.5.1.1. JOHN, born in Scotland, after 1795, did not emigrate to America with his parents but became established in Manchester England; died 8 Nov 1852 in Glasgow. Married Mary Anne Rae. She is listed in the 1841 Borgue census records as a village school mistress. John had a child by her (1) William. Mary Ann Rae Corrie, took her son to Kirkcudbright where she ran a nursery school for many years. Kirkcudbright is the ancestral home of the Corries. She may have had some support from John Corrie's Family of which there were many in Kirkcudbrightshire. John Corrie disappeared from view for years. William Corrie married Isabella Main of Borgue in 1849. While the Corrie name is prominent in Kirkcudbrightshire, one would never know that fact from the dozens of letters that were writted by the Main family relatives to William and Isabella in America. John Corrie must have been a black sheep in the family, he is believed to have left his lawful wife and taken up with a woman who was not; they are believed to have had eight "natural" children, among them (2) George, (3) Frederick Henry, (4) Harriet, (5) Mary. (John's branch was researched by Kent Tool. (ref. 1.1.5.1.1.1.4.2.1.1.) This begins the Corrie branch from John Corrie, son of William of Clunie, William Corrie (ref. 1.1.5.1.) and Mary Gracie. William is descended from John Corrie, (ref. 1.) his son, Adam Corrie, (ref. 1.1.) his son "Father John" John Corrie, (ref. 1.1.5.). Remember to apply any prefix birth order The numbering for John's descendants is used only in the heading in the interest of space. All those with Corrie surnames are in capital letters. 1.1.5.1.1.- John of Manchester, England.
