Click for full size pictureThis is a digital copy of an original charcoal sketch of William Corrie. Since William looks fairly young, it is assumed that the sketch was made in New York City before moving to the prairies of Iowa. And, since the coat looks the same as the coat worn in the 1860 photo taken in NYC, one might assume that the drawing was taken from the photo or another taken the same day. Although there are numerous photos of Isabella and their young children, no photos of William are know from the Iowa period of his life. He married on 12 Jul 1849, Isabella Main, born 22 Jul 1822; died 16 Jul 1909, whose family lived in Borgue which is very near Kirkcudbright (and in which kirkyard many of the Corries are buried). William trained as a draper (one who markets yard goods, mostly cotton and woolen) but also worked as a tobacconist in Glasgow, in Scotland, and might have received training from his Corrie relatives who were involved in the "Scotch trade" in Scotland and England.
In 1845 William had a son whom he named (1) William. The mother is unknown. Since this was William's first son, it was a tradition that he be named "William", as had been the case for prior generations. That tradition would be carried on until the 1980's. Isabella and William had four children (2) John, (3) Mary Rae, Since both William's and Isabella's mothers were named Mary, it was logical to name their first daughter Mary; the middle name comes from William's mother who was Mary Rae. (4) Samuel Main, his middle name coming from Isabella's side of the family. Grandmother Corrie had died a few months before Sam's Birth. After Sam was born, there were no more children born in New York City. Tuberculosis had become a problem in the City and Both Isabella and her cousin Mary Shaw were thought to be infected. Mary returned to Scotland and died within a few years of her return. William, who had often dreamed of farming the land, and Isabella decided to move to Iowa in 1863 in an effort to improve Isabella's health. Their last child, (5) Isabel, was born in Iowa.
