William and Isabella Main Corrie circa 1860
These are the earliest known photographs (not tin types) taken of Isabella and William in New York City. They
(along with William's son and mother, the schoolteacher from Borgue) moved from Kirkcudbright, Scotland to New
York City in 1849. William had trained as a draper in Scotland and quickly found a job in the yard goods
department of New York City's stylish department store, Stewarts. William became a citizen in 1856. William's
mother died in NYC sometime during 1857-1858. Isabella's sister Mina and a cousin, Mary Shaw, also moved to
New York City where the three young women set up a dress making business. The entire family lived together in a
small apartment. The elegant dress seen here was doubtless made by the young women and may be Isabella's wedding
dress since it is known that her wedding dress was black.
