1.1.3. WILLIAM, baptized 9 Mar 1735 in Terregles; became a lace merchant and later general "Scots trade" merchant Wellingborough, employing scores of carriers conveying cotton textiles to Glasgow and returning with "all goods manufactured in Glasgow", mainly whisky and salt; purchased in 1779 estates of Dunrod, Kissocktown, Nether Senwick, Brighouse, Cairniehill, and South Park (these in the parish of Senwick which was later incorporated into the parish of Borgue); magistrate in Dumfries elected Praefes of the Dumfries quarter sessions in 1784; died 10 Jan 1811 in Wellingborough, buried in Borgue kirkyard (memorial stone erected by his only living daughter Janet states his age 76); married Margaret Harrison, born 1731, died 13 Nov 1779 aged 48, buried Cheese Lane, Wellingborough; they had six children (1) William, (2) John, (3) Jane, (4) Margaret, (5) Mary, (6) Adam.
