          John (ref. 1.) and Alexander (ref. 2.), in the Terregles Churchyard, Scotland. 
          in Shenandoah, Page Co, IA; lived his first five years on Cottonwood Farm, then moved with his parents 
          to Sidney, IA where he graduated from high school; graduated with honors from Morningside College in 
          Sioux City, IA and did graduate work at the University of Arkansas, graduating Phi Beta Kappa; taught 
          English at Southwest Missouri State University, then hiked the Appalachian Trail; became a wilderness 
          skills instructor and a professional writer of wilderness and outdoor life including The Boy Scout 
          Handbook (10th & 11th editions), The Conservation Handbook and the BSA Fieldbook; works summers with 
          the Student Conservation Association; writes in the winters in Seattle, WA; address 555 #. 55## ######,
