"==The pioneers of Luking Township have placed that
locality under very heavy obligations for hard, persistent labor under serious drawbacks. The men who
conquered the winderness are those who will go down in the pages of history as those who made history possible.
David G. Milligan, a farmer and stockman of Section 5, Lukin Township, was born in that township, 7 Feb
1834, and comes of one of the old pioneer families here. His father, John Milligan, now deceased, was a
pioneer of the township; coming from his native land of Scotland, where he had married Margaret Corrie, also a
native of the same country. John Milligan was only twenty-two years old when he came to Lawrence County, IL..
locating in Lukin Township, where he immediately obtained eighty acres of land which had been entered by some
of his wife's people. Here he lived and died, gradually bringing his land into a good state of cultivation. "
... "Twenty years before his death, John Milligan went blind, and his sons were forced to complete the work
their father had commenced." ... "David Milligan farmed at the old homestead until 3 Sep 1903, when he moved
to his present location. For some years he helped to operate a threshing machine, and was unfortunate enough
to lose two fingers. Politically he is a Prohibitionist, and he has been active in his party. He is a member
of the Methodist Church, and is always interested in its good work. Mr. Milligan has worked hard all his
