5.2. JOHN DIXON, son of John and Polly Corrie, born 27 Feb 1828 in Corrieville, Lawrence Co, IL; farmed his
250 acre portion of his father's land near Camden, Schuyier Co, IL adjoining his brother's farm; in 1850 he
went gold mining in California during the Gold Rush. Later he went to Colorado and reportedly walked to the
Pike's Peak area looking for gold. The story is told that he broke down his feet and was said to have the
largest feet in Schuyler County; returned home in 1853 with a fair quantity of gold and resumed farming on the
old homestead; in 1862, he joined the 78th Illinois Volunteer Infanty, participating in several battles in the
Civil War including the battle for Atlanta; the 78th took heavy casualties, (on 1 Sep 1862, 862 enlisted men
were mustered in, 140 recruits were added. In 7 Jun 1865, only 393 men remained to be mustered out) John
Dixon was wounded four times at Jonesboro but survived and upon his honourable discharge in Chicago returned
to his farm in Camden; never married; died 1910 at age 82; buried in White Oak Cemetery not far from his
father John's farm.
