8.4.1.3. STUART MILFORD, born 11 Jan 1906 in Isabel, KS; died 24 Jul 1999; moved with his family by covered
wagon from Kansas to Colorado. When he got fidgety or was misbehaving on the trip, his father made him
walk along side of the wagon which was pulled by cows. Stuart grew up on the ranch in Baca Co, CO. He
remembers how, during the long boring days riding herd on the animals on the prairie, his father taught him
how to make "rattle bones" out of the rib bones of cattle they found out on the ground, Spoons could also
be played, and, eventually, the "rattle bones" were made of pieces of hardwood. Valerie (ref.
1.1.5.1.8.4.1.5.1.) commented about her uncle and grandfather's hobby that "I guess that a race that could
make music from a bagpipe and inspire armies to bravery could keep a lonesome, bored young cowpoke
entertained for a summer with the study of the percussive potential of a couple of cow ribs." During his
high school years, Stuart lived with his uncle Frank Corrie (ref.
1.1.5.1.8.4.6.) in Isabel, KS. He
became an electrician and moved to California to find work near his maternal grandfather John Measer; As
a boy, Stuart hauled grain to town with a horse and wagon and raised broom corn. As an adult he loved to
garden, first developing the soil using compost, then installing a drip system, growing the vegetables, and
