Several inductors are shown, there are many ways to think of an inductor.
An inductor is an short circuit to DC, really a minimal resistance to DC which is just the resistance of the wire.
An inductor is a open circuit to AC (if the frequency is high enough.)
An inductor placed in series with a varying signal smooths out the higher frequencies.
An inductor placed across a varying signal removes the lower frequencies frequencies.
