(continued from page 31 This begins the Corrie branch from Robert Corrie and Sarah Harbert descended from William of Clunie; his son 1. John, his son 1.1. Adam, his son 1.1.5. John ("Father John"). Remember to apply any prefix birth order numbers to following pages as they occur, eg. Sarah is birth order 1.1.5.7.1.. Also remember names in upper case have an assumed Corrie surname. The numbering for Robert's descendants is used only in the heading in the interest of space. All those with Corrie surnames are in capital letters. 1.1.5.7. ROBERT, born 9 Jun 1779; died 4 Sep 1863, went to England and became a lace dealer in Wellingborough and Dublin; married in Olney, England 24 Apr 1814 to Sarah Harbert who was born 24 Oct 1788; died in 1865, she also came from Wellingborough, England; Robert came to America in 1828 after his two brothers, William, (ref. 1.1.5.1.) and John, (ref. 1.1.5.4.) had emigrated, and following John's death. Since he was the last to come, Robert profited by the experiences of his brothers and his nephew John (Jno) (ref. 1.1.5.3.2.) his brother Adam's (ref. 1.1.5.3.) son who came over on the original trip when the land was purchased. He wrote his uncle Robert in 14 May 1828: "When you get over to the other side, avoid indulging in spirits, which are by far too cheap and too plentiful...you will see more drunkenness than you ever witnessed in England or even Scotland. A few oranges, a few lemons, and a few sweetmeats on board with you will be invaluable...when you get to the port you sail for (it took them a month) go by a hired wagon to Wheeling (rather than being exposed to much heat and fatigue),..you will find plenty of covered wagons constantly carrying goods into the interior...find another family or two to descend the river with and take one ark amongst you..." Robert and his family left England sometimes after their daughter Jane was born/baptized Jun 1826; came through Pittsburgh, PA where their eldest son James died of a fever; came on to Wabash Co, IL near Corrieville where they settled in Decker's Prairie on some of brother Adam's land. One point troubled the British relatives a great deal. They worried because Robert and Sarah had to do so much of their own work. They couldn't imagine why they didn't have servants. In 1834, James Harbert, Sarah's brother, wrote to her from England, "As respects thy own situation, I cannot think how thou can perform all thy domestic duties. I feel thy state in the wilderness, dear sister." A friend of the Harberts in England, a Mr. Foster, came over to see the Corries in Illinois with a view to settling among them. When he got to the Corrie neighborhood, he saw a man feeding his hogs. He asked him, "Where is your master?" The man replied, "I am the master!" it was Robert Corrie himself. Mr. Foster wrote back to England that indeed he had no intention of settling in Illinois. "Why, Squire Corrie himself was slopping his hogs." Robert and Sarah are buried in the Wabash Presbyterian Cemetery in Orio, IL (sometimes called Linn); children, 1. Sarah, 2. James, 3. John Robert, 4. Margaret, 5. Jane, 6. Unnamed child. 7. Unnamed child, 8. Possible unnamed child.
