How Not to, and how to create a 22kv dc supply
I take no responsibilities for anything resulting from someone else trying any of this, high voltage is highly dangerous, and I'm lucky to be alive. i.e. it can KILL YOU, you have been warned.
This is all it takes for a really crappy rectifier (well that an a water resistor)

Note the meters are reading about +/-1.5kvdc nothing but a spark gap, of course its taking 7.5kvac to do this
Update: I've noted that these meters show about 1/3rd the peak voltage at 60hz for a half wave. This means these rectifiers are much better than I suspected. I will have to try and make a full wave and see if that is correct.

A schematic of half a bridge, the spark gap arrow is the needle, the spark gap ball is a smooth (relatively) sphere of brass, but also surface of water works too.

A more efficient way to rectify, this one doesn't short out the 'bad' wave to ground.
